Why Safe Pedestrian Crossings Are the First Step Toward Safer Public Transit for Children

Every morning, thousands of children leave home believing their biggest challenge is catching the bus on time. In reality, the most important part of their journey often happens before they ever step aboard.

A well-lit, well-designed crossing still depends on a child knowing to use it. A well-educated child still depends on the crossing being visible enough for a driver to yield to them. Treating these as complementary investments, rather than competing priorities, creates a more comprehensive approach to pedestrian safety.


Public transportation itself fits into this same framework. Transit agencies can and do invest heavily in on-board safety, driver training, and stop design. That investment matters, and it works best alongside strong infrastructure for the sidewalk and crossing that lead up to it. A well-run transit system and a well-designed crossing accomplish more together than either does alone.
